Chris Minns is an Australian Labor politician who has served as the 47th Premier of New South Wales since March 2023, following Labor's victory in the state election that ended 12 years of Liberal-National Coalition rule. Born in 1979, Minns grew up in the Sutherland Shire and completed his education at the University of Technology Sydney, where he studied communications. Before entering politics, he worked in various roles including as a political advisor and in the private sector. Minns was first elected to the NSW Parliament in 2015 as the member for Kogarah, a seat he has held since then.
Minns rose through Labor's ranks relatively quickly, serving as Shadow Minister for Transport and Infrastructure from 2019 to 2021 before being elected as NSW Labor Leader in June 2021, defeating incumbent leader Jodi McKay. As Premier, his government has focused on key policy priorities including housing affordability, healthcare system improvements, and infrastructure development. Notable early initiatives have included efforts to address the housing crisis through planning reforms and increased social housing investment, as well as commitments to improve hospital capacity and reduce ambulance ramping times. Minns has positioned himself as a pragmatic leader, emphasizing economic responsibility while pursuing progressive social policies, and has worked to rebuild Labor's credibility in NSW after previous electoral defeats.
